Review: R-EVOLUTION GTX WOMEN'S BOOT

I had to write a review on the R-Evolution boot, as they have become my favorite backpacking and hiking boot. I wore them while guiding four summits on Kilimanjaro, as well as a two-week backpack in Yosemite, and although it has become time for a new pair, I am still wearing them for snowshoeing and hiking in Colorado.

I am often between a size 8-8.5 and I had to size up to the 8.5 and was glad I did! * Also, low volume boots/shoes don't work for me very well, so this boot was perfect.

First of all, these boots took no time to break in! I received them late and only had a few days to wear them before Kilimanjaro, and was incredibly thankful that they were so instantly comfortable. They have a wide toe-box which is excellent for long days of hiking with a heavy pack, they also are wider than some La Sportiva's I have had, this proved great for swelling at altitude.

COST: $240

TRACTION

Traction always felt very secure to me, no matter how steep the terrain (rock, scree, mud) their Vibram Driade sole did the trick and it felt good to trust my boot as others around me were slipping.

WATERPROOF..NESS

Waterproof! The Gore-tex lining was remarkable as my feet never have been wet in these shoes (they were tested in rain and snow). Usually I have experienced Gore-tex shoes as a little 'muggy' feeling, but these are super breathable!  Their durability is excellent and they feel very lightweight for a hiking boot.

FIT

The boot fits to above the ankle, leaving you with stable steps (tested with 50-60lbs  pack for multiple days) They also felt equally good on uphill and downhill. I have never had a blister from these boots even after 14+ days in a row in them.

EXTRA TIPS

Tip: Their sister shoe, R-evolution PLUS takes longer to break-in but is warmer.

Pros: Comfortable; no time to break-in; durable (I wore them for over 300miles before I needed a new pair); waterproof;

Cons: insoles/midsoles were fine but seemed pretty basic and could become uncomfortable after five+ hours on the trail; my feet were cold on a couple of the summit nights on Kilimanjaro where temps plunged to -20degrees F.
